Our 1st Anniversary!
Crazy, but true! PixlScribes officially incorporated way back on July 1st, 2016. I'll be the first to admit that we didn't accomplish all of our goals for year one.
But you know what? That's okay. Because I look back at all of the things we DID accomplish and...hoo-boy...it is a heck of a list!
1. We ran our first two pilot sessions at DeBary Elementary School, and they were a huge success! We filled all available slots, and the kids had a ton of fun learning coding, basic engineering concepts, design, playing games, and collaborating with each other!
2. We were approved to operate as a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit! Fund-raising and donations will go a long way towards making this venture a success!
3. We scavenged and acquired all sorts of useful equipment -- game consoles, small lcd tvs, art supplies, you name it! Hands on activities are essential to our workshops, so it was vital to have this equipment on hand. Our goal is to include even more hands-on activities in year two, such as chromebooks, 3D printers, programmable robots, tools to demonstrate basic circuitry, more art supplies, etc.
4. We got our name out there...and for that, I owe you my sincerest thanks! We're still small, but that's okay. Our intent was never to make this some huge operation. We want to be like that little girl in the starfish allegory. We can't make a difference in every child's life, but we can for that one...and that one...and that one...and...
5. We learned so much! Running the two pilot programs was a real eye-opener, in all the best ways. Conceptually, we were prepared. Possibly overprepared! But it's where the rubber meets the road that counts. Some of the projects were a bit too rigorous for our intended audience, so we dialed it back. Some things that we were absolutely positive would captivate the students ended up kinda' boring them. And technical challenges?! We learned the hard way not over-rely on having an internet connection or a working power outlet! None of these were game-breaking (pardon the poor video-game pun), but they were important lessons that will help us be even more prepared, and more successful, in our second year of operation.
Honestly, I could add several more numbered items to this list, but those are the biggies! Like I said, it's quite a remarkable list of accomplishments! And again, we could not do it without your support! Thank you so much for that, and I look forward to sharing more with you as we approach the new school year.
All the best,
Patrick
